The MGS seed exchange
The photograph at the top of this page shows part of the seed head of Tragopogon porrifolius (Photo Jorun Tharaldsen)
Chantal Guiraud runs the MGS seed exchange which is a service totally free to MGS members. She renews the list regularly and gives advice on what to sow in each season.
See Seed Workshop at the Home of Chantal Guiraud for advice on how to propagate from seeds.
Seed List - January 2025
Chantal writes: I invite you to take a closer look at our updated seed list on our website in order to place your orders in the new year 2025.
I would like to thank our generous donors, David Tivol, Françoise Salomon, John Harwood, Pierre Bianchi and all the others that I cannot name here, due to lack of space. Without them, we would not be able to offer such a large choice of species: 478 different taxa at the moment. I personally provide about 200, collected either in my garden or during my visits outside. And so, more than half come from your donations, and this year the new taxa amount to 122.
In addition to the seeds listed below, Château Pérouse has generously made available to MGS members its Index seminum containing around 1600 taxa. Seeds from this list should be ordered as usual through Chantal, as part of the quota per member of 10 packets per year.
Among the most popular seeds in 2024, here is the hit parade:
Many of you have questions about the new laws on importing and exporting seeds. I would like to clarify this because it is not a simple matter. The biggest change is that importing seeds from third countries (outside Europe and Switzerland) is no longer allowed into the European territory, unless a phytosanitary certificate is provided. It should be noted that a phytosanitary certificate costs money. For example, a member living in Ireland can send seeds to all European countries since Ireland is part of Europe. But a member living in Northern Ireland must provide a certificate if he wants to send seeds to a European country. The opposite is completely different, since all European countries, as well as Norway and Switzerland, can, for the moment, send seeds to the United Kingdom without a certificate.
For the US and Canada, the rule is different, in that it is allowed to send small batches of seeds (limit being 50 packets of 50 seeds) to the US, after applying for an import permit (free) from the US government (USDA website). From experience, I have sent seeds to California, without a permit and the seeds arrive safely every time, but I guess it all depends on the state and some US states are more restrictive than others.
Finally, and I regret this very much, we are not allowed to send seeds to Australia, Japan and Switzerland.
How to order seeds
All MGS members may order 10 packets per year. If you contribute seeds to the exchange then you may order 15 packets per year. There is no cost. Please remember that all members are responsible for complying with their local laws. You may order seed from Chantal at the address below or by emailing her. Do not forget to include your name and address when you request seeds.
Chantal requests “Please remember when you order seeds to give me alternatives to the ten species you are requesting in case stocks of them are exhausted.”
How to send seeds
The seeds should be removed from their pods or protective covering, then placed in paper envelopes (not plastic) and well sealed. On the envelope please write: the donor’s name, the scientific name of the plant, the year and location in which the seed was harvested. Chantal accepts all seeds, though with a preference for those of plants from mediterranean-climate areas.
New European regulations require a phytosanitary certificate for importing seeds coming from non-European Union countries but the contrary is not always true. Requirements may vary depending on the country.
Seed donations should be sent to:

Note - The seeds in this list are exchanged between garden lovers, entirely on their own responsibility. In particular the MGS bears no responsibility for accuracy of naming or for germination. This seed exchange is in no way a commercial transaction to which any specific regulations apply. Seed from hybrid plants (cultivars) may produce plants which do not have all the characteristics of the parent plant.
